Moxibustion

Moxibustion is a treatment that uses a herb called mugwort. It is burned indirectly on the handle of a needle, above the skin, on salt or on a slice of ginger, or directly using the Japanese method burning small cones of the herb on a thin layer of cream to protect the skin.

In Chinese medicine cold (temperature) is a common cause of pain anywhere in the body, especially in gynaecological complaints, as the uterus may be easily invaded by cold. Cold constricts preventing the free flow of energy which in turn creates pain.

Moxibustion warms areas of the body and acupuncture points to accelerate the healing process and reduce pain. It is particularly useful in conditions involving cold to gently add heat to the body. It is also used to provide a boost to the immune system when used on specific acupuncture points, a popular treatment during the fall to prepare the lungs for cold and flu season.

Two often used applications of moxa seen are here. The first method uses loose moxa pressed into small or large cones and placed over a thin layer of ointment to protect the skin. The cones are placed on specific acupuncture points that are much like prescriptions that have a wide range of therapeutic uses. The second method uses a moxa stick that is hovered an inch away from the body to create a penetrating warmth over a larger area. This method is often used to provide pain relief in larger joints and muscles or to bring warmth into specific areas, such as the abdomen to aid digestion or pelvic area to boost fertility.

THE BENEFITS OF MOXIBUSTION

  • Adds a gentle warmth to the acupuncture channels to expel cold from the body. Cold enters the body creating joint and muscle pain that is often aggravated by cold weather. Cold may also enter the uterus causing gynaecological or fertility issues.

  • Promotes the flow of qi (energy) and blood in the body to remove stagnation. When energy and blood cannot move freely it leads to pain, headaches, fatigue and even irritability or depression. Proper blood and energy flow alleviates these conditions and many more.

  • May be used directly on acupuncture points to boost digestive strength, improve immunity and increase energy. It is even used on a point located on the little toe to help turn babies in breech position.
